Useful Links
While it is not advisable to start Googling diseases too soon, as I admit sometimes it is inevitable, I suggest starting and almost limiting yourself to the following few effective sites.
I apologize in advance if most of them are in English, although (almost) all of them include extensive sections in Spanish.
1
Clear, assertive and constantly updated, the American Cancer Society site has information ranging from the most general to the most specific and, as if the above were not enough, it includes references that lead you to sites where each type of cancer is discussed in particular.
2
Also within the general range, the Mayo Clinic site discusses all sorts of topics in a clear and concise manner, but is particularly helpful in terms of options for coping with pain. Up-to-date and modern, this site should be a favorite of any hypochondriac… and those who are just curious.
3
I will not be the one to ignore poor thyroid cancer, which also screwed me up so much. This link takes you to the Thyroid Cancer Survivors Association (ThyCa) where you can find everything from recipe books to help with low-iodine diets to links to support groups, and from sources of information to specific information for everything related to the thyroid, which turns out to be a lot and is important.
3
Both the Foundation and its website are wonderful. It includes catalogues, updated information, sources of help and even offers the possibility of asking questions directly to a specialist… and having them answered!
4
The Leukimia & Lymphoma Society
The organization's site, in addition to containing tons of information, includes options to help those who do not have the means or resources to obtain the treatments they need and also offers direct lines for free consultations with oncology nurses and social workers.
